Lightning will encounter Oerba Yun Fang in the Dead Dunes, one of four regions in Nova Chrysalia choked with ruins amongst a blistering desert. You may remember that Fang fell into crystal stasis at the end of Final Fantasy XIII, but it appears she has recently awoken along with Vanille who now resides in Luxerion. Both Fang and Vanille were taken in by the Order, but unknown circumstances drove Fang to leave for the dunes to search for a long-lost relic — eventually becoming the leader of the bandit gang Monoculus. Fang will battle alongside Lightning as she plumbs the depths of various ruins seen in the new batch of screenshots below.
The monsters you’ll encounter in Lightning Returns aren’t unlimited in their numbers as one might expect from a Final Fantasy game. Should you run across the Last One, the last of a specific species of monster, you’re in for quite a fight. However, you’ll be handsomely rewarded with better spoils for eliminating a type of monster from the game — a feat which will likely require some planning with your limited days left before the end of the world.
Should you fall in battle, you can use Lightning’s pool of Energy Points to Escape as denoted in the lower left section of the battle interface. However, one hour of in-game time will elapse if you have no other option but to use it.
